Planning to elope with your dog? Here’s how!
not just pets, they’re family
If you’re even considering bringing your dog to your elopement, chances are they’re a pretty big part of your life. And I understand that completely.
Eloping with your dog isn’t just cute (although it absolutely is). It’s meaningful. It’s intentional. And for a lot of couples, it wouldn’t feel right to do it any other way.
As a Colorado elopement photographer, I’ve had the chance to photograph dozens of dogs during elopements, and I genuinely love having them as part of the day. Every dog has their own personality, and I’m used to working with all of it — the calm moments, the chaos, and everything in between.
But bringing your dog along does take a little more planning than just grabbing a leash and heading out the door.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from choosing a dog-friendly location, to keeping them safe and comfortable, to making sure your day feels just as good for them as it does for you.

Can my dog sign my marriage license?
Yes, your dog can sign your marriage license in Colorado. 🐾
There is a marriage law in Colorado called self-solemnizing, meaning couples can legally get married without requiring a third party to sign, officiate, or approve the marriage. Because of that, the state came up with the best law ever, to let dogs sign as witnesses instead!
If your dog won’t actually be there on your elopement day, they can still sign it, just at a later time. Just take your marriage license home with you, add their paw print, and then mail it back in. It’s a really easy way to make them part of it without needing them there in person. Just make sure you mail it back within the timeframe you’re required (as of writing this it was 63 days).
Quick tip: Most counties in Colorado still allow this, but it’s always a good idea to double check with your county clerk just in case anything has changed.

Dog-friendly elopement locations in Colorado
There is no shortage of dog-friendly elopement locations in Colorado with the million of acres of public lands to chose from. But the best places to elope in Colorado with your dog are on public land, like national forests and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) areas. These locations are typically much more dog-friendly than national parks or heavily regulated areas. They also give you more flexibility. Your dog can usually be with you the entire time, instead of being limited to certain areas or trails. You won’t have to plan your day around strict rules or restrictions. Another big advantage is space. Public lands tend to be less crowded, which makes it easier to find a spot that feels more private and relaxed. You’re not competing with large groups of people or trying to move quickly through a busy area.
My favorite Colorado elopement locations that are dog friendly are: Crested Butte, Ouray, Telluride, or Breckenridge.
You won’t find the best places to elope with your dog on the internet
The best places to elope with your dog in Colorado are going to be the hidden gems on public lands that you can only find from boots on the ground adventuring by actually being here. Places where you’ll feel comfortable with letting your dog off leash because there’s no one else around. You won’t be trying to navigate huge crowds of people or trying to move quickly to get the best pictures. When couples book one of my elopement packages, they get all the insider knowledge from me. From dog-friendly locations to what actually works logistically.

8 Tips for Eloping With Your Dog
Pick a dog-friendly location
Picking a dog friendly location will be #1 on your list if you want your dog to be able to stick by your side the entire day. National Parks don’t allow dogs, bummer, I know! But there is no shortage of places in Colorado where you can elope with your dog. Work with your Colorado elopement photographer to pick out the best spot for you. If you’re bringing your dog along, i’ll make sure to help you pick a pet-friendly location!
Practice your dog signing your marriage license
If you’re eloping in Colorado and plan to have your dog sign your marriage license – practice the stamping before your big day arrives. Don’t wait for the day of your wedding day to be the first time to see if your dog will cooperate. Buy an ink stamp pad and practice on your dog a few times.

Water for your dog
If you’re eloping some place where there won’t be natural water sources like rivers or lakes, prepare to bring extra water for your dog.
Bring styptic powder
In case your dog hurts their paw or one of their nails, you’ll be so glad you have this! It’s one of those things that is so small and can be packed anywhere that it’s just better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. When a dog hurts their paw and it starts bleeding, sometimes it just doesn’t want to stop bleeding. Having the powder will make your life so much easier if something does happen!
Bring food and treats
Especially if you’re doing a more challenging hike, or are planning for an all-day elopement. Your dog will love a little snack, and it’ll make for really cute pictures!
Hire a dog friendly elopement photographer
By hiring a dog-friendly elopement photographer (like me!), your day will go much smoother. Hire someone you know has experience with dogs, likes dogs, and wouldn’t mind either holding your dogs leash if needed, or even entertain, or give belly scratches.
Dress your dog up
Have them wear some wedding clothes also! You could have them wear a corsage or a tux. Get creative! This will make for some really special elopement pictures to look back on. I do understand that not every dog is willing to play dress-up for their humans so if your pup is just not into it consider something more simple like a bandana.
Don’t forget your doggy waste bags
Everything you pack in must be packed out, including dog waste.

3 ways to include your dog in your elopement ceremony
Make your elopement ceremony even more special by including your dog. Here are some ideas:
Best Dog and/or Dog of Honor
Ring Bearer or Flower dog
Have your dog be a witness
Best time of year to elope with your dog(s)
Dogs are very loyal creatures, and it’s up to us to do our part and make decisions for them, plan ahead and prepare, and not put them in situations where they’ll be uncomfortable. With that being said – here is what to expect for each season when eloping with your dog.
Eloping with your dog in the Spring
Lots of places in Colorado are muddy in the spring due to all the snowmelt, so keep this in mind when choosing your elopement location. Think about bringing a towel to dry off your dog and their paws before they jump up in the car. There might also still be snow on the ground, so bring a paw protection like Mushers to protect their paws from the cold snow.
Eloping with your dog in the Summer
Dogs love nothing more than being outside with their humans, and enjoying nature! Depending on your location – the summer is a great time to elope with your dog! Avoid areas that are too hot and that could be potentially dangerous for your dog to be outside too long. Picking a location that is in the mountains, high in elevation is a great choice for keeping cool in the summer.
Eloping with your dog in the Fall
The fall season is a great time to elope with your dog! Temperatures are pretty mild in most places – and your dog will love you for taking them along the greatest adventure of your life! Keep in mind that once the sun goes down, it gets chilly. Your dog will thank you for bringing them a jacket to stay warm if it gets too cold.
Eloping with your dog in the Winter
If your dogs are anything like my two dogs – they love the snow! Some dogs absolutely love it while other dogs won’t step in the stuff! You know your dog better than anyone and it’s us as dog owners’ responsibility to know their limits. If you’re wanting to elope with your dog and have a winter elopement, keeping them warm and protecting their paws is a must. Ruffwear is a great brand for dog gear. Mushers is my go to for protecting their paws against the cold snow.
Leave no trace ethics to follow when eloping with your dog
Plan ahead and prepare
Get to know your elopement location. Is there water nearby? What type of surface ground will you be walking on most of the day? Will the area be crowded? It’s always good to plan ahead and prepare when eloping with your dog.
Leashes
Dogs are wonderful pets that bring so much joy to our lives. But like any pet, they need some rules and boundaries set for their own safety as well as the safety of others around them. Be sure to keep your dog on a leash where it’s required.
Prepare to pack out all their waste
Dogs are the most favorite pet of many people, but they also leave behind a little gift for their owners to clean up. Dog poop. It’s something that we all have to deal with, and it’s not always a fun or pleasant job. However, we all have to do our part with packing it out.
Be considerate of others
Not everyone loves dogs as much as us, so just be mindful of it.
Stay on trail
It’s important to understand the environment you’re in. If it’s an area that’s in repair, or delicate tundra, or wildflowers – this ethic is especially important. Areas with dry grass, dirt, or rocks are usually okay to step on. Leave more about LNT and the ethic of staying on trail here.
What to pack for your dog for your elopement
When going over your elopement checklist, be sure to include these top items to pack for your dog.
Water & water bowl
This might be an item that could be skipped if you’ll be in areas with fresh water for your doggo to drink from.
Paw protection
Some outdoor elements and areas make it so your dogs will need paw protection. If you’re planning on hiking in the snow or on ice, Mushers Secret Paw Protection is a must! If you’ll be in an area with cacti, consider getting your dog hiking shoes.
Day pack
It’s so nice when your dog can carry their own stuff! Think about water, food, dog bowls, etc. All these items add up in weight. Let your dog carry it. They’ll be happy to have a job to do.
Light
If you’re planning on doing some night hiking with your dog on your wedding day, this would be a good item to have!
Dog poop bags
Yupp, pack it out! I love these Doggy Do Good Biodegradeable bags
Leash and Collar
I love Ruffwear gear for my dogs.
Harness
Some dogs do much better on a harness than a collar when hiking. Consider getting your pup a harness for your hiking elopement.
Treats
I love Zuke’s treats, and so do the dogs!
Toys
If you’re planning an activity for your dog on your wedding day, don’t forget about the toys! Tennis balls, frisbees, squeak toys. The list goes on and your four-legged companion will be super happy you remembered their favorite activity!
